In rural Beaver County, Pennsylvania, comes a band on the rise. The band I speak of is Mushcup. The band is six guys, collectively pounding on "mainstream's" door. They range in age from 24 (DJ EN4000, turntables) to 29 (Brian, lead guitar). Filling in the gap is KAOS (lead vocals), Shaun (rythm guitar), Scott (bass) and the newly introduced "Gino" (drums). They recently performed at the first ever Jagermeister tour, setting the stage for Coal Chamber and platinum selling artist Drowning Pool. In 1999, Mushcup did a free show with Crazytown, taking place at Pittsburghs Metropol. They have also played with the likes of the Filthee Immigrants, SinOmatic, Buzz Poets, The Ultimatics, Shonuff, and the Voodoo Babies. The "CUP" fanbase has spread all across the United States, Australia, England, Canada, and even into South Africa. Their latest release, the Drained EP, can now be purchased at area Media Plays and any Mushcup show. I got to sit down with Brian and EN4000,here is what they have to say about,well everything.
Who is Mushcup?
B: We are six guys that kick alot of ass.No,No,NO I take that back. We are six indivuals who each bring something differnt to the band that makes it us,I guess.
E:'Cause we are all differnt background pretty much.
B:Would you say its the band we wish were out there but isnt so we make it ourself?I always go on a rampage about how fucked music is today.--I gotta be careful what I say.--You now how people just dont rock out anymore.Im always bitchin' about that you know.That there is just a lack of a real good time.They just get up there and kick your ass.
E.We try to be professional but yet still be fun.Dude we kicked that questions ass!
B: No I dont think that was good enough...oh its cool.
What is a Mushcup?
B: Do we wanna give that away? Ill tell tell the truth. Back long ago when I was a boy.Well in highschool,almost.This girl I knew,she had a dog,it was this really pretty collie.Looked like Lassie you know?I dotn remember what that dogs name was.It had a litter of puppies.The puppies were all fine and well.But there was this one puppy that was like the runt of the litter.It was all fucked up.It had all kinds of problems.It was ill, it was ill as hell.It was all deformed and contorted.It like couldnt eat solid food.It would puke up whatever it ate.Excpet for when they would like mash it up with milk and stuff.So they had this, like, from what I understand a cup and they would mush up the food for the dog in this cup.Wether or not they called that cup the MUSHUP I dont know.Her older brother ended up naming the dog MUSHCUP.
E: He really liked the idea for about 10 minutes and then it sucked.
B: Yeah,I liked the name for a short while and no one wanted to call the band freak tractor.So we were MUSHCUP.
E.And Sexual Chocolate was already taken.
If you could be in another band,what band would it be?
B:Id be in MOtely Crue
E Id be in Incubus,probably my biggest influence.
BWell either Motley Crue or the Allman Brothers Band,Seriously because I love both sides of that.
E Incubus or Run Dmc.Id like to be Jam Master J for a day.
B: Thatd be nice.Youd havea big cock.
E:I could be in fat boys.
B:I wish you would.Gain more weight.I want you to be like four hundred pounds.
What do you think is the greatest accomplishment of the band?
E.St Thomas was big.
B: The fact that weve stayed together this long,The bands been together for coming on six years .I think thats a pretty damn good accomplishment.I dont know alot of bands on a local level dont stay together.They get discouraged
E: We are still together we are just replacing.
B: Just staying together.Alot of bands get discouraged after the first year.We didnt get anywhere for a while and then in year four,things started really clicking and we started getting alot of really good gigs.
E:When EN joined the band,Another big accomplishment is ST THOMAS for me.Cause I dont get to go nowhere.It was a vacation but we got to go on business so to speak
B: Yeah weve done National Telivison,Two episodes of Jenny JOnes as the house band.We got national sponsorship of JAGERMEISTER who ended up sending us to the fucking Virgin ISlands.
E: Yeah like an International Sponsorship,they sent us to the Virgin Islands.How fucking wonderful!?It kicks ass It kick ass.
If you could pick one song that you would never have to play again,would you and if so what song what would it be?
E: I know what song id pick..."808"
B: yeah drop the "808" ...I like em all
E: theres a couple,I dont know..they just need worked on.We got kinda lazy.I dont know if id scrap em
What artist inspired you to be what you are today?
B: Theres not really anyone out there that does muich for me as a guitar player.I know this sounds ridiclous but fucking Dickie Besson and Dwayne and The Allman Brothers Band.The Days of Old,Eric Clapton when he played with balls back in the Cream Days.Yeah thats what its all about,back when people really played guitar.
E: Im turntables so,I grew up listening to all metal.My dad was like "your not bringing rap into this house"I would sneak it in so at that time it was Run DMC,Public Enemy,Terminator-X and Jam Master J were my big influences.To tell you the truth,I bought turnables for me never to be in a band.It just worked out that way so.I got into turntables pretty much because of Public Enemy and Run DMC.With no ambitions to be in a band.
Bert or Ernie
E:See I was in another band from New Castle(PA),called LESS THAN ZERO.We always used to drive the long way,to Beaver Falls and New Brighton and Mias Pizza in New Brighton has a Bert in the window.Its a big Bert doll and it scares the fuck out of me.
B: Bert is really cool cause hes got the unibrow.I like Bert
E:But Ernie had the Rubber Duckie
B:Yeah but Ernie was always busting Berts ass
E: Its cause he was responsible

B:If you got it on a stick, you can do funny things with it.And you can place it in funny places easier.Sometimes its good to stick your popsicle in funny places.
