Last night was a night to remember and to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the legendary original hardcore punk outfit THE MISFITS! As an added bonus, due to Doyle the guitarist having family issues, the guitar player for the night was none other than Dez from the legendary Black Flag! And drums were split between Robo of Black Flag and the legendary Marky Ramone. Awesome show... now the review.
As I got there, there was no mistake... this was a punk show to the fullest. Saw a lot of leather, lots of spiked hair (yes, even mohawks!), and lots of really old people who were Misfits fans from way back. As I got inside, the whole stage was decorated with the typical Misfits stage show... skulls-a-plenty in other words. I also saw two huge projection screens, and two full drumsets, one for Robo and one for Marky. And a third off to the side. I was unaware that there would be an opening band, but there was. Local punk-rock heroes The Unabombers were handpicked by Jerry Only of the Misfits to open. They're very Misfits-influenced. The singer wears makeup and has a voice JUST LIKE Glenn Danzig's. They played a good 30 minute set, fitting fifteen songs in that small space. Definitely a good way to get it going.
After the Unabombers, there was the usual thirty minute break. Then, instead of some stupid intro music, Jerry Only steps to the mic and says hello, introduces Dez and Robo, and then they launched into the show! It's worth noting that Jerry Only's bass is as legendary as he is... it's huge and has a skull for a headstock. Amazing piece of work. I couldn't tell you the setlist for the life of me, but they did a bunch of Misfits songs (including "Last Caress") and then Dez took the mic and did "Rise Above" from Black Flag, following that up with "Six Pack" and a few more. Then, it was back to Misfits material. Somewhere they did "Dig Up Her Bones" and then "Die Die My Darling," a true crowd pleaser. Finally... Robo stepped down, then Marky came on. It was a sight to see, that guy. Wearing a Superman T-shirt, leather jacket, and boots he was the personification of punk legend. So he did a lot of Misfits stuff, but they managed to wriggle in a few Ramones cuts ("KKK Took My Baby Away" was the first). After two blistering hours, Jerry said to the crowd "The last two songs we're gonna do are two of the best punk songs ever written! This one's called 'I Wanna Be Sedated!'" And it was awesome. That was followed by... "Blitzkrieg Bop!" Legendary. Even better was that afterwards they actually signed autographs! My ticket will forever be savored.... Jerry, Dez, and Robo all signed it. Marky kinda vanished, but that was nothing too greatly missed... I'll forgive him. I got enough... a great night of punk rock, and a memory that will never leave me. PUNK ROCK FOREVER!
(Note: I am not a punk rocker, but this kind of experience needs to not be passed up. Metalhead, punkers, everyone needs to see this show. KNOW YOUR ROOTS!)
